THE WRITER'S HANDBOOK 2010 COMPETITION TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- The promoter of this competition is Palgrave Macmillan (the "Promoter"). The Promoter is a publisher of educational books and is a division of Macmillan Publishers. These terms and conditions govern the Competition. The Promoter's principal place of business is at Brunel Road, Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hants, RG21 6XS.
- All entrants must be over 18 years of age at the date of entry. The eligibility of any entrant is at the sole discretion of the Promoter. Employees, families or agents of the Promoter and/or any of its associated companies are not eligible to enter the Competition. Only one entry per person is permitted.
- NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. To enter the competition, entrants must visit the competition webpage on www.thewritershandbook.com and email their article including their contact details as listed on the website to the competition email address. Entrants can also enter by registering their free access via the code on the sticker on the front of their copy of The Writer’s Handbook 2010 and visit the competition webpage, found at www.thewritershandbook.com and email their article including their contact details as listed on the website to the competition email address. In order to qualify for the prize, your entry must be received via the competition email address specified by the closing date, 31st January 2010, as stated in the competition details. The article must be entitled and submitted on the following subject: 'What Makes a Bestseller' and be written in English language and be 1,500-2,000 words in length in total in order to be entered for the competition. Incomplete entries including missing contact details or those not received by the above deadline will be disqualified.
- Entry to the competition is via submission to the competition email address specified on the competition webpage found at www.thewritershandbook.com only and no other method of entry will be accepted.
- You confirm the following in relation to your entry. Namely that all such material is your own original work and has not previously been published anywhere in the world; that it does not infringe any laws whether of the UK or elsewhere or the rights of any third party; that no other person was involved in the creation of such work; that you have the right to give the Promoter and its respective licensees permission to use it for the purposes described here and in all other business purposes of the Promoter and its licensees and that you have the consent of anyone who is identifiable in your article or the consent of their parent/guardian if they are under 16.
- The Promoter may at its sole discretion (though we will endeavour to avoid unnecessary disappointment) substitute any Prize for a prize of a similar nature and/or comparable value. Winners may not request and are not entitled to a cash alternative to their Prize and their Prize is non-refundable and non-transferable.
- The Promoter accepts no responsibility or liability for any lost, damaged or incomplete entries via the competition webpage and all such entries will be deemed invalid. Proof of entry shall not be proof of delivery or receipt. Only entries received in accordance with these terms and conditions will be acceptable. The Promoter will not be liable if a Prize cannot be taken by a winner for any reason beyond the control of the Promoter.
- The winning article from those entries received before the closing date will be judged by a panel of experts selected by Macmillan Publishers (including at least one judge who is independent of the Promoter). The winner will have their winning article published in The Writer's Handbook 2011 and receive a free creative writing course of their choice supplied by The Complete Creative Writing Course at the Groucho Club, Soho, London. For the avoidance of doubt no royalties or other payment will be made to the winner in respect of such use or any other use made by the Promoter or its licensees of the winning article. Travel expenses, hotel and subsistence or any other related expenses to the course will not be paid for by Macmillan Publishers and will be the sole responsibility of the winner. The winner will be required to comply with the terms and conditions and rules of conduct required by the course organisers and the Groucho Club. Course availability and dates are subject to change. All other 49 runners up will be randomly-selected by The Writer's Handbook team and each will receive a runners up prize related to creative writing selected by Macmillan Publishers. The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The Creative Writing Course must be booked directly by the winner and must be booked by 30th June 2010.
- If, for whatever reason, The Writer's Handbook 2011 is not published, the Promoter is under no obligation to publish the winning article.
- The entries will be judged on their ability to engage readers on the subject
- The winner of the competition will be contacted directly by Macmillan Publishers via the email address supplied on their entry to the competition on 31st March 2010.Both the winner and 49 runners-up to the competition will be announced on www.thewritershandbook.com competition webpage on 31st March 2010.
- The winner agrees that Macmillan Publishers will own the copyright and shall have the right to make any editorial amendments as necessary before publication of the winning article in The Writer's Handbook 2011. Prior to publication the winner will be required, as a condition of winning, to enter into a contributor's agreement with the Promoter assigning copyright in the article to the Promoter.
- The winner may be required to participate in publicity surrounding this promotion.
- By entering the Competition, all entrants are deemed to accept these terms and conditions. The Promoter may, at its sole discretion, change the dates of entry into the Competition and/or the dates on which the Competition will be promoted and the Promoter reserves the right to alter, amend or withdraw these Terms and Conditions and/or the competition without prior notice.
- The terms and conditions of any third party supplier may apply and must be accepted and complied with by the winner.
- Other than for death or personal injury arising from negligence of the Promoter, so far as is permitted by law, the Promoter hereby excludes all liability for any loss, damage, cost and expense, whether direct or indirect, howsoever caused in connection with the Competition or any aspect of the Prize.
- These terms and conditions are governed by and construed and performed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, whose courts shall be the courts of exclusive jurisdiction.
